Minute Meditation 2013

I would like to extend a warm welcome back to the entire edtec family.  I hope you each had an enriching holiday and work break, enjoying whatever you chose to spend your time on: whether that be with family, friends or even some “just-for-you” time recharging your battery.

To help kick off the new year, I would like to share a thoughtful verse -- from an anonymous source -- but which recently came to me as part of a daily meditation email I get by virtue of being a student at Benedictine University.  The suggestions provided aptly convey my own hopes and thoughts as we start afresh for 2013.
Feel free to pass them along to your own extended families and cadre of friends.  I might also suggest returning to them often as we wend our way forward throughout the coming year and beyond, especially as we come upon the inevitable bump in the road meant to challenge our convictions and ability to persevere.  But most importantly, as you consider the helpful suggestions old anonymous has to offer, always keep in mind the students we serve each day.

With hope and anticipation of a productive and wondrous year for all,

Anna

"Recipe for a Happy New Year"

Take twelve fine, full-grown months; see that these are thoroughly free from old memories of bitterness, rancor and hate, cleanse them completely from every clinging spite; pick off all specks of pettiness and littleness; in short, see that these months are freed from all the past—have them fresh and clean as when they first came from the great storehouse of Time.

Cut these months into thirty or thirty-one equal parts. Do not attempt to make up the whole batch at one time (so many persons spoil the entire lot this way) but prepare one day at a time. Into each day put equal parts of faith, patience, courage, work (some people omit this ingredient and so spoil the flavor of the rest), hope, fidelity, liberality, kindness, rest (leaving this out is like leaving the oil out of the salad dressing— don’t do it), prayer, meditation, and one well-selected resolution. Put in about one teaspoonful of good spirits, a dash of fun, a pinch of folly, a sprinkling of play, and a heaping cupful of good humor.

  1. I feel that the postives working in and around Edtec is knowing that what are doing is good and has a purpose. We all are working to the same goal and have a talent pool in place throughout company that is of a high standard. We have a sense of belonging with the students, peers, outside agencies and Edtec. The more we can have interaction between all of these will only solidify our efforts, desire and passion for what we do.

The round meetings are a wonderful idea and the more communition will provide empowerment and a shared vision. I believe more opportunities to speak, socialize creates unity, trust and co-operation. This was shown at the Christmas party and the round meeting.

We have momentum and I feel this will help keep this going and get even improve.

Thank you for letting us have a forum to voice out thoughts.

  2. One thing that I think we could do to focus on being more positive is to build trust among team members. One way to build that trust is to remember to view, respect and treat each other as professionals. We need to trust in each other's abilities to do our jobs and do them well. We need to trust that people will ask for help when it's needed, share information thatis vital to performing as a real team, and do their jobs to the best of their abilities with high levels of enthusiasm and professionalism. To build that trust, we must also earn the trust of others. We must be willing to focus our efforts on our duties, keeping our mission in mind at all times. We need to stop wasting energy worrying about what others are doing and instead focus on being the best that we can be. Positive change begins with the individual. We cannot stand by and expect to see things change around us if we are not willing to change ourselves as well. Each person should commit to making a positive change, for the good of the team, and trust that other team members are doing the same.

  3. I believe the best way we can grow as individuals and as a team is to always treat everyone with the same respect we would like to be treated ourselves. Thinking back on the various jobs and different supervisors I have had, my most influential were those whom I believed treated me with respect and were willing to get their hands dirty with their staff. This is the person I strive to be on a daily basis. I want to lead by example and not just by command. I think this is important to demonstrate to our students who have grown accustomed to getting what they want without having to put forth any effort.

As I tell most of my students, you can only control you, which is the motto I live by. In order for me to be able to live with me I have to think about others and consider their situation. Sometimes this means I have to sacrifice some comfort of my own, but that is okay. This is something that I am willing to do in order to live a happy life and I choose to be happy!!!
